Delavan—The remains of Sgt. Bennett Recknagel, arrived in Delavan Tuesday evening and were taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Recknagel. The body will be at the Evangelical Lutheran church in Delavan from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock Friday, when funeral services will be held with the Rev. O. C. Thuslus officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery. The Rutledg-Boviall Post of the American Legion will have services at the grave. Bennett Recknagel was born March 31, 1922, in LaFayette township. He attended rural schools in Darien and Richmond townships and was graduated from Darien high school in 1940. Up to the time of his induction into the army he was engaged in farming with his father. He entered the army Nov. 20, 1942, and received his basic training at Camp Roberts. Calif., and as later transferred to Camp Shenago, Greenville, Pa. From there he went overseas to North Africa where he served with the First Infantry division. In July, 1943, he went to Sicily and later to England. He took part in the invasion of Normandy, Belgium and Germany. He was killed in action Sept. 13, 1944, at the time that the First army was breaking through the Siegfried Line. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Edgar, six sisters, Mrs. Esther Burcham, Mrs. Helen Thomas, Katherine, Ella, Ida and Elizabeth; two brothers-in-law, Clyde Burcham and Leon Thomas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Doris Recknagel; a niece, Barbara Jean Burcham; and two nephews, Jon Wayne Thomas and Terence Lee Recknagel. Several aunts and uncles also survive.
