JIM STEWART WAS STRUCK BY NO. 5 ON SATURDAY NIGHT AND KILLED INSTANTLY
Saturday evening No. 5 train going west was about an hour late. Just before the train came in Jim Stewart started down the track for his home. A short distance before he got to the place where he usually left the track, the train came along and struck him, killing him instantly.
It is hard to account for the accident. It is supposed by some that owing to the train being late, it was running faster than usual and caused Stewart to miscalculate and thus he was caught.
He was born in South Carolina about 65 years ago. He lived in Illinois in 1863, and went from there to Massachusetts in company with Aaron Saulter, and enlisted in the 55th Massachusetts colored regiment, serving till September 1865. Jim was an industrious colored man and stood well in the community. He was buried by Meade Post on Monday at 2 p.m.
