STERLING BULLETIN OBITUARY, 1920, 09/09

MRS. SARAH M. STEWART

Miss Sarah M. Goss was born in Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 17, 1858, where she lived till she was 19 years of age. She then moved to Camargo, Ill., where she was united in holy matrimony to James H. Stewart. Three children were born, one dying in infancy.
They then immigrated to Kansas and settled in Sterling. After coming to Kansas nine more children were born to this union. She had four step-children. Her beloved husband in an accident preceded her to the Beulah Land. Of the twelve children nine survive. Six boys and three girls.
She also leaves to mourn her demise four sisters, one brother, eleven step-grandchildren, fourteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
At an early age she was converted and lived a devout Christian until her death. She was a faithful member of Grant's chapel for a number of years, being a class leader, and a stewardess. She was also a charter member.
About three years ago she had a serious attack. In the winter of 1919 she contracted the influenza, which left her in a very weakened condition. The last attack which resulted in her death became evident in July. For about four weeks she was under the care of a chiropractic and then she was placed in the hands of a medical doctor, who spared neither time nor energy in trying to save her, but to no avail. She took her bed Aug. 2nd and for awhile she seemed to be making a brave and successful to be making a brave and successful fight but complications had set the seal and she didn't have sufficient strength to win.
How lovely to know the children did all they could to lessen her suffering and comfort her last hours. She was an ideal mother, Christian and friend. To know her was to love her. She was a quiet, sweet disposition.
As only a few mothers were able to do, she gave four sons, and one grandson to the service of their country. One went overseas but all were able to return to her safely.
The worry of them being away helped to shorten her life. In her last moments the only two audible words that she was able to express were home and mother, signifying she was going home to rest. The end came at 4:30 Monday evening, aged 63years, 11 months, 19 days.
Mother works for you, loves you and cares for you; Forgiving you anything you may do, But the only thing bad she does for you, Is to die and leave you. Sleep on Mother, dear; Peace be to her ashes.
