Allen E. Gates was the third of four known children of Stephen N. Gates (1791-1860) and Johanna (went by Hanna or Hannah) Rothrock Gates (1788-1867), who married 19 Oct 1817 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. The parents and all four of their children moved from Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina to the vicinity of the region that became the Moravian settlement of West Salem, Edwards county, Illinois.
Allen married Sarah E. Clodfelter (1829-1914) on 20 Jul 1848 at Edwards County, Illinois. Allen and Sarah were the parents of seven known children, namely:

2. Francis Augustus Gates (1851-1852)
3. John Henry Gates (1852-1938)
