Taking a hiatus from his classes,William joins the Union army,at the age of 18,at Salisbury,Vermont on June 2,1862.He enlisted first as a Private in Company K of the 9th Vermont Infantry. At Brattleboro,Vermont on June 17,1862 he was dropped from the rolls of Company K and transferred to Company C of the 9th Vermont Infantry. On June 25,1862 he was appointed 4th Sergeant of Company C.During his time with the 9th Infantry Regiment,William recorded a journal of his service.(His hand written journal presently is being transcribed by this author). On Sep 15th, 1862 the 9th surrendered to Stonewall Jackson's troops at Harpers Ferry,West Virgina.William was then ordered to march to the prisoner encampment at "Camp Douglas" in Chicago to await to be properly exchanged with an equivalent confederate solder(under the prisoner exchange protocols then in effect). Here he and his fellow comrades endured deplorable conditions when forced to take up quarters in former horse stables, which had been used during the World's Horse Fair. These stables had no floors, and many had water standing there in with accompanying stable refuse.Years later when,William penned an article in the "National Tribune",of Mar 28,1907,he wrote about his experience at "Camp Douglas".In describing his quarters there he wrote the following: "A respectable farmer would not have put his hogs in such a place, but soldiers must obey orders"."We had a pretty bad time In this place". "We were given hay for our beds, which we had to put on the damp ground".

On Jan 15,1863 he was paroled as a prisoner at:"Camp Douglas" and was reactivated by exchange of specific numbers of prisoners with the Confederacy. He then entered service with the Regular Army Volunteer Infantry Regiment,of the 2nd U.S. regular Infantry Regiment, Co I and later Co C.

After the war,William began his civilian working career with The Howe Scale Company in Brandon,Vermont. He started his employ there as a "Sealer" on Aug 28,1865.Afterwards William became a Foreman for said department and eventually a traveling Builder of Scales from 1882-1888.

On Feb 26,1867 ,William was married to,Frances Ellen "Fannie" Lewis at the First Presbyterian Church of Jordans,NY by Rev JVC Nellis.Unfortunately just six days short of their first wedding anniversary,Fannie succumbs to Pneumonia and dies on Feb 20,1868.

At the brides parent's home on Court Street in Middlebury,Vermont on Feb 2,1876,William Harley Sanderson was married second to,Elizabeth Augusta Howe.Once married they lived in Brandon,Vermont until after the 1877 birth of their daughter,Frances Elizabeth Sanderson.Soon after her birth,William transferred to the Howe Scale Companies Rutland,Vermont factory.Their second child,Charles Winfred Sanderson was born in Rutland,Vermont.

William and Elizabeth's two children's birth and death dates were as follows ...

1-Frances Elizabeth Sanderson b May 16,1877 in Brandon,Vermont,d Jun 24,1958 in Cleveland,Ohio

2-Charles Winfred Sanderson b Jul 16,1879 in Rutland,Vermont,d Dec 31,1949 in Miami,Florida.

In March of 1889, Elizabeth,William and the children moved to Detroit,Mi where he began work as a "Foreman" at "The Computing Scale Line" Soon after this company became "The Computing Scale Company " of Dayton,Ohio to which place they relocated. The Sanderson's lived in Ohio during the "Industrial Revolution" an exciting time in our nation's history.During this period the cities of Cleveland and Dayton played a vital role in producing many innovations and inventions.Dayton was known as "The City with a Thousand Factories".William remained with the "The Computing Scale Company" until 1894 when he left them to engage in employment with "The Fairbanks Scale Company" in Pittsburgh,Pa.William remained in Pittsburgh until March of 1897 when he began work with "The National Computing Scale Company" of Cleveland,Ohio. In the fall of 1900, William Harley and Elizabeth moved to Newark,New Jersey where,William started work for,"The Wilmore Computing Scale Company" there.

While living in Newark,William's wife,Elizabeth loses her battle with a three year long illness and passes away on Dec 12,1901.Her remains were taken to Brandon Vermont's Pine Hill Cemetery for burial.

After Elizabeth's death,William remained in Newark until late May of 1902 where he returned to his former employer: "The Computing Scale Company" of Dayton,Ohio. Here,William's position was "Mechanical Supervisor",taking charge of the experimental Department of said company.Later that same year on Oct 23,1902 he married his third wife the widow, Susan M (Bryan) Markham in St Louis, Missouri.Sadly,Susan dies just a year later on Dec 26,1903 and is buried at "Woodland Cemetery" in Dayton. Three years later in his postion as Mechanical Supervisor at his job at "The Computing Scale Company" in Dayton,William invented an improvement to a "Platform Scale",which not only weighed an article but recorded it's value as well. His invention was PATENTED on July 3,1906.William remained in this capacity here until the Spring of 1910 when he was forced to retire because of illness.

William Harley Sanderson married his fourth wife,Flora E. Rawson in 1905 and moved to,712 N Salem Ave in Dayton Ohio which was several city blocks away from where the Wright Brothers lived on 7 Hawthorn Street. On June 17th and 18th of 1909 in Dayton,Ohio the Wright brothers were honored with two days of celebration for their invention of flight. The whole city of Dayton came out to honer their home town heroes.Dayton's schools and factories closed for the occasion so that people could attend the parades, public reception, fireworks display and awards ceremony.Since, William was employed with "The Computing Scale Companies" factory in Dayton during this event,it is highly likely that,William was among those who participated in the two days of celebration for the Wright Brothers.

William Harley Sanderson dies in Dayton,Ohio on Dec 4,1911,his remains were taken to Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon,Vermont to be buried,in the Sanderson plot, next to his first wife,Fannie and second wife,Elizabeth along with his parents,David Sanderson and Lucy Elwell.
