Charles Winfred Sanderson was born in Rutland Vermont July 16,1879.With a variation on his middle name,Charles was named after his Uncle,Charles Wesley Sanderson,a successful and accomplished artist in his day.Charles Winfred had one sister Frances Elizabeth born May 16,1877.Charles and Frances' father,Civil War Sgt,William Harley Sanderson's paternal grandfather was,Ebenezer Sanderson, a Revolutionary War Veteran,born in Petersham,Massachusetts on June 8,1752.
In 1775,Ebenezer Sanderson joined with his fellow American patriots to serve in the American Revolution.The first campaign that,Ebenezer Sanderson engaged was with, Colonel Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec.This Campaign began on September 11,1775 and was described by,Ebenezer in a hand written family history as: "One of the most intensive campaigns that I engaged,the terrible march up through the Maine forest to Quebec and that engagement".After this,Ebenezer Sanderson was given the rank of Lieutenant by the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts and charged on April 11,1776 with orders for rounding up and enlisting men to serve in a regiment.The regiment would serve with Captain Nathaniel White's Company for the purposes of fortifying the town and harbor of Boston.

Charles' father,William Harley Sanderson with the rank of Sergeant served in the 9th Vermont regiment and other regular army regiments of the Union Army during the Civil War.A few years after the war's end,William Harley first married,Frances Ellen Lewis.She died of pneumonia in 1868.Eight years later in Middlebury,Vermont on Feb 2,1876,William Harley married,at the brides parents home,his second wife,Elizabeth Augusta Howe ,mother of,Charles Winfred and Frances Elizabeth Sanderson.
Long before Vermont was a state,Elizabeth Augusta Howe's family were early pioneers settlers of Vermont.Her 3rd great Grandfather, Nehemiah Howe (1693-1747)and his family, were in a group of the first white settlers of Vermont's frontier.On October 11,1745,Nehemiah Howe was captured by Indian's on the Great meadow of Hinsdale,Vermont and taken to a French Canadian prison where he died,just as he was about to be released.While in prison he recorded his ordeal,detailing his captivity in a journal which was published in 1747 and titled: "The Captivity of Nehemiah How".
Charles's father ,William Harley Sanderson,after the Civil War, William began is working career with the "Howe Scale Company" of Brandon,Vt on Aug 28,1865.William remained under the employ of the Howe Scale company in Brandon and Rutland Vermont until March of 1889 when the Family moved to Detroit,MI.William's employment as a traveling sales rep would change to a permanent position with them when the company relocated to Dayton,Ohio.While working in Dayton in the fall of 1894, William with is family moves to Pittsburg,Pa where,William was employed with the "Fairbanks Scale Company".In March of 1897 the family moves to Cleveland,Ohio where,William took employment with the "National Computing Scale Company"

While still in Ohio on Sep 3,1901,in the town of Washington Court House,Ohio,Charles re-enlisted this time in the US Army's Coastal Artillery and was assigned to the 121st Company,which was stationed in Key West,Florida.Just three months later while in Florida,Charles gets word that his mother ,Elizabeth Augusta Howe Sanderson dies in Newark on Dec 12,1901.In May of 1902 his father now a widower returned to to Ohio this time to Dayton with employment at "The Computing Scale Company" of that city.William remained with them in Dayto until the spring of 1910 when he was forced to retire because of an illness.
Charles served three years in the Coastal Artillery,was rated a First Class Gunner and was discharged Sept.4,1905 with high marks as a Sergeant.He then moved back to Ohio with his Father who was now in Dayton,Ohio.Charles worked a short time as a book Keeper with the "Excelcor Laundry Company",in Dayton.Charles started classes at Dayton's, "Miami Commercial College" on Sept 15,1905 to become an Accountant.He recieved his Diploma in the field of Accounting on Feb 24,1906.The following year,Mar 1907,he moved back to Key West,Florida where he was hired as an office manager by the "Ruy Lopez Cigar" manufactures.Nine mounths later,Dec 4,1907,he was married to Lorena Alexandria Harrison. Lorena was the daughter of the Emory educated,Georgia-born Reverend,Eugene Amelius Harrison,pastor of the Old Stone Methodist Church on Eaton Street in Key West.She was the organist at her father's church when she met,Charles Sanderson.
After their marriage on December 4,1907,Charles and Lorena Sanderson moved to,913 White Street in Key West where Lorena gave birth to her first three children,Wilfred Lauier Sanderson born 1909 died in infancy,Edith born in 1910 and died in 1911,and Florence Elizabeth born Dec 30,1911.Before the birth of their fourth child,Margery Louise born on Feb 24,1914 the family had moved to,1210 South Street in Key West.On Nov 6,1915,Charles W Sanderson was Elected as city Councilman of the Sixth Ward in the city of Key West.His election was announced in the Dec 1915 Issue of the "Key West Citizen" that proclaimed "Mr Sanderson is wide awake to the public needs of the city and is imbued with progressive ideas which makes him a most valuable and useful member of the city council.". It was probably after, Charles Sanderson's election as a City Councilmen that the family moved to, 323 Whitehead Street where they rented from a, Mr William L. Delaney,who was a customs inspector and owner of the property.Lorena Sanderson's older sister,Minnie Agnes(Harrison)Robinson and her husband,George rented here as well.It is likely that that Lorena's older sister, Minnie husband,George Robinson was acquainted with Mr Delaney because,George Robinson was a customs inspector as well. While living at the Delaney house ,Charles and Lorena Sanderson gave birth to their last child,Gertrude "Trudy" Sanderson on Feb 15,1915.We know this to be true because of the testimony of this authors grandmother,Gertrude "Trudy" Sanderson Harris in which she stated to me that she was born in the Delaney House.
In May of 1917,Charles left his employment at the,"Ruy Lopez Cigar" factory to enter Officers training for service in World War I.He left for "Camp McPhearson",Georgia for Officers Training in the Quartermaster Corps.His Training lasted from May to August of 1917.On Aug.15,1917 he received a commission for 2nd Lt in the Quartermaster Corps.Charles W Sanderson was then sent to his assignment at "Camp Gordon" Georgia where he served as Adm.Supervisor of Operations for 23 regimental exchanges.Serving till the end of the war,Charles Winfred Sanderson was discharged April 2,1919.Charles returned to his home at ,323 Whitehead Street where two months later he received a letter dated Jun 4,1919 promoting him to full Captain in the Quartermaster Reserve Corps.
After the war Charles was rehired by "Ruy Lopez Cigars" and remained with them until March 1921,leaving to pursue more lucrative employment with another cigar manufacture," Thompson Brothers" in Tampa,Florida.While the Sanderson's moved to Tampa,Lorena's sister,Minnie and her husband,George Robinson moved to the "Coral Rock House" at 1401 Reynolds Street where, George died Dec 4, 1923.
Once Charles and his Family were in Tampa,Charles took on the role of "Executive Office Manager".In Jan of 1924,Charles entered into a Partnership with "Thompson Brothers".With Charles' partnership the company reorganized and became "Thompson & Company" with Charles taking on the role of "Cost Accountant".By 1925,Charles Sanderson was made "Vice-Presidant" ,and by 1927 had become, "President" of, "Thompson & Company" a position he held until Dec of 1929 when,Charles was forced to resign due to Illness.Charles remained unemployed due to his illness from Jan 1930 thur Dec 1930.During this time the Family divided thier time between Tampa and Lecanto,Florida where,Charles Sanderson's mother in law,Margery King Harrison and his sister in law,Minnie Harrison Robinson had built a new home.The home was named, "MiniMar" a combination of their two names, Minnie and Margery.In late 1930 the family moved to Miami,Florida where,Charles went to work as an, "Office Manager" for the,"Sommerfeld Cigar Company", on 59 NE 42nd Street in Miami,in Jan of 1931.The,"Sommerfield Cigar Company" was liquidated in May of 1936 which left Charles unemployed.Charles then became a self employed accountant until his retirement.

After their marriage on December 4,1907,Charles and Lorena Sanderson moved to,913 White Street in Key West where Lorena gave birth to her first three children,Wilfred Lauier Sanderson born 1909 died in infancy,Edith born in 1910 and died in 1911,and Florence Elizabeth born Dec 30,1911.Before the birth of their fourth child,Margery Louise born on Feb 24,1914 the family had moved to,1210 South Street in Key West.On Nov 6,1915,Charles W Sanderson was Elected as city Councilman of the Sixth Ward in the city of Key West.His election was announced in the Dec 1915 Issue of the "Key West Citizen" that proclaimed "Mr Sanderson is wide awake to the public needs of the city and is imbued with progressive ideas which makes him a most valuable and useful member of the city council.". It was probably after, Charles Sanderson's election as a City Councilmen that the family moved to, 323 Whitehead Street where they rented from a, Mr William L. Delaney,who was a customs inspector and owner of the property.Lorena Sanderson's older sister,Minnie Agnes(Harrison)Robinson and her husband,George rented here as well.It is likely that that Lorena's older sister, Minnie husband,George Robinson was acquainted with Mr Delaney because,George Robinson was a customs inspector as well. While living at the Delaney house ,Charles and Lorena Sanderson gave birth to their last child,Gertrude "Trudy" Sanderson on Feb 15,1915.We know this to be true because of the testimony of this authors grandmother,Gertrude "Trudy" Sanderson Harris in which she stated to me that she was born in the Delaney House.
In May of 1917,Charles left his employment at the,"Ruy Lopez Cigar" factory to enter Officers training for service in World War I.He left for "Camp McPhearson",Georgia for Officers Training in the Quartermaster Corps.His Training lasted from May to August of 1917.On Aug.15,1917 he received a commission for 2nd Lt in the Quartermaster Corps.Charles W Sanderson was then sent to his assignment at "Camp Gordon" Georgia where he served as Adm.Supervisor of Operations for 23 regimental exchanges.Serving till the end of the war,Charles Winfred Sanderson was discharged April 2,1919.Charles returned to his home at ,323 Whitehead Street where two months later he received a letter dated Jun 4,1919 promoting him to full Captain in the Quartermaster Reserve Corps.
After the war Charles was rehired by "Ruy Lopez Cigars" and remained with them until March 1921,leaving to pursue more lucrative employment with another cigar manufacture," Thompson Brothers" in Tampa,Florida.While the Sanderson's moved to Tampa,Lorena's sister,Minnie and her husband,George Robinson moved to the "Coral Rock House" at 1401 Reynolds Street where, George died Dec 4, 1923.
Once Charles and his Family were in Tampa,Charles took on the role of "Executive Office Manager".In Jan of 1924,Charles entered into a Partnership with "Thompson Brothers".With Charles' partnership the company reorganized and became "Thompson & Company" with Charles taking on the role of "Cost Accountant".By 1925,Charles Sanderson was made "Vice-Presidant" ,and by 1927 had become, "President" of, "Thompson & Company" a position he held until Dec of 1929 when,Charles was forced to resign due to Illness.Charles remained unemployed due to his illness from Jan 1930 thur Dec 1930.During this time the Family divided thier time between Tampa and Lecanto,Florida where,Charles Sanderson's mother in law,Margery King Harrison and his sister in law,Minnie Harrison Robinson had built a new home.The home was named, "MiniMar" a combination of their two names, Minnie and Margery.In late 1930 the family moved to Miami,Florida where,Charles went to work as an, "Office Manager" for the,"Sommerfeld Cigar Company", on 59 NE 42nd Street in Miami,in Jan of 1931.The,"Sommerfield Cigar Company" was liquidated in May of 1936 which left Charles unemployed.Charles then became a self employed accountant until his retirement.
All three of Charles Sanderson's girls lived out their lives in Miami.Florence married Paul Warfield, Margery married,Joe Burton and had two girls,Joanne and Dorothy Jean,and Gertrude married Harry Lee Harris and had a son,Robert Sanderson and a daughter,Mary Lee.

In 1775,Ebenezer Sanderson joined with his fellow American patriots to serve in the American Revolution.The first campaign that,Ebenezer Sanderson engaged was with, Colonel Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec.This Campaign began on September 11,1775 and was described by,Ebenezer in a hand written family history as: "One of the most intensive campaigns that I engaged,the terrible march up through the Maine forest to Quebec and that engagement".After this,Ebenezer Sanderson was given the rank of Lieutenant by the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts and charged on April 11,1776 with orders for rounding up and enlisting men to serve in a regiment.The regiment would serve with Captain Nathaniel White's Company for the purposes of fortifying the town and harbor of Boston.
Having come from England in the early seventeenth century,the Sanderson family were early settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.In the 1680's,Deacon Jonathan Sanderson, settled on property known as, "Piety Corner",a part of Watertown,Massachusetts,which would someday be set off as Waltham.Jonathan Sanderson was born Sep 14,1646.Jonathan was a first generation American born son of the immigrant,Edward Sanderson(1615-1660).Edward with his brother,Coloniel Silversmith,Robert Sanderson(1608-1693)had come to America in about 1638.Thus making,Charles Winfred Sanderson the 4th great grandson of Deacon Jonathan Sanderson and the 5th great grandson of,Edward Sanderson the immigrant.
Charles' father,William Harley Sanderson with the rank of Sergeant served in the 9th Vermont regiment and other regular army regiments of the Union Army during the Civil War.A few years after the war's end,William Harley first married,Frances Ellen Lewis.She died of pneumonia in 1868.Eight years later in Middlebury,Vermont on Feb 2,1876,William Harley married,at the brides parents home,his second wife,Elizabeth Augusta Howe ,mother of,Charles Winfred and Frances Elizabeth Sanderson.
Long before Vermont was a state,Elizabeth Augusta Howe's family were early pioneers settlers of Vermont.Her 3rd great Grandfather, Nehemiah Howe (1693-1747)and his family, were in a group of the first white settlers of Vermont's frontier.On October 11,1745,Nehemiah Howe was captured by Indian's on the Great meadow of Hinsdale,Vermont and taken to a French Canadian prison where he died,just as he was about to be released.While in prison he recorded his ordeal,detailing his captivity in a journal which was published in 1747 and titled: "The Captivity of Nehemiah How".
Charles's father ,William Harley Sanderson,after the Civil War, William began is working career with the "Howe Scale Company" of Brandon,Vt on Aug 28,1865.William remained under the employ of the Howe Scale company in Brandon and Rutland Vermont until March of 1889 when the Family moved to Detroit,MI.William's employment as a traveling sales rep would change to a permanent position with them when the company relocated to Dayton,Ohio.While working in Dayton in the fall of 1894, William with is family moves to Pittsburg,Pa where,William was employed with the "Fairbanks Scale Company".In March of 1897 the family moves to Cleveland,Ohio where,William took employment with the "National Computing Scale Company"
While the family was in Cleveland,Charles Winfred Sanderson as a young man of 19 years enlisted for the Spanish-American War in Company B,5th Ohio Volunteer Regiment in Cleveland,Ohio on June 23,1898.His Company B of that Regiment was sent to Florida in preparation for deployment to the island of Cuba for the Spanish-American War.However, before his unit received orders to embark for Cuba it was announced that the war was over.Nov 5 of 1898 Charles mustered-out of his unit in Fernandina,Florida,then returned home to Cleveland,Ohio.While Charles was working in Cleveland as a clerk his Father and Mother Relocated to Newark,NJ in the fall of 1900 when his father took a new job with the "Wilmore Computing Scale Company" there.
While still in Ohio on Sep 3,1901,in the town of Washington Court House,Ohio,Charles re-enlisted this time in the US Army's Coastal Artillery and was assigned to the 121st Company,which was stationed in Key West,Florida.Just three months later while in Florida,Charles gets word that his mother ,Elizabeth Augusta Howe Sanderson dies in Newark on Dec 12,1901.In May of 1902 his father now a widower returned to to Ohio this time to Dayton with employment at "The Computing Scale Company" of that city.William remained with them in Dayto until the spring of 1910 when he was forced to retire because of an illness.
Charles served three years in the Coastal Artillery,was rated a First Class Gunner and was discharged Sept.4,1905 with high marks as a Sergeant.He then moved back to Ohio with his Father who was now in Dayton,Ohio.Charles worked a short time as a book Keeper with the "Excelcor Laundry Company",in Dayton.Charles started classes at Dayton's, "Miami Commercial College" on Sept 15,1905 to become an Accountant.He recieved his Diploma in the field of Accounting on Feb 24,1906.The following year,Mar 1907,he moved back to Key West,Florida where he was hired as an office manager by the "Ruy Lopez Cigar" manufactures.Nine mounths later,Dec 4,1907,he was married to Lorena Alexandria Harrison. Lorena was the daughter of the Emory educated,Georgia-born Reverend,Eugene Amelius Harrison,pastor of the Old Stone Methodist Church on Eaton Street in Key West.She was the organist at her father's church when she met,Charles Sanderson.
