While it was believed by some that John was a veteran of WWI, because of incorrect information posted on his death certificate, this is not true. Historical records reveal that he was rejected from service by both the Army and Navy as a result of flat feet.
In Jun 1917, John was employed as a textile worker for Appalachian Knitting Mills in Knoxville.
He would later become a barber; an occupation which he would continue until his untimely death in 1942.
John was 48-years of age.
