Second son of Major John Finley and Sarah Ellen Tate. Had extensive farm and cattle interests at Fairmount his home estate that later became the town of North Wilkesboro after the railroad was brought to the north side of the Yadkin River opposite Wilkesboro, NC.

Traveled about 3000 miles on horseback from Wilkesboro to St. Louis Missouri and back from 30 Sep 1834 Feb 1835.

Married Martha Lenoir Gordon in Wilkesboro, NC 30 Mar 1842.
