Thomas Von Whitney died on September 2, 2004 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Mr. Whitney was born on July 29, 1934 in Oneida Kansas to Deo Von Whitney and Julia Maude Davis Whitney. He grew up in the Salem-Humboldt, Nebraska area. His parents were farmers. Mr. Whitney graduated from Humboldt High School in 1951.
Thomas Whitney joined the Air Force in 1952. He was sent to Korea in July 1953. He gave his life to the Lord while in Korea reading a Gideon Bible and came home to study the ministry of the gospel. Mr. Whitney was ordained on July 21, 1957 at the Christian Church in Douglas Nebraska. He served several churches, the longest at the Four Mile Congregational Church in Humboldt Nebr for 12 years and 10 years in the Verdon,Nebr Congregational Church.
Mr. Whitney received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958 and Master of Science Degree in 1960 from the Nebraska State Teachers College at Peru, Nebraska. He received a Doctor of Christian Education from the Center of Christian Study in Hollywood California. He was a teacher, guidance director and superintendent at various public and parochial schools and was a recipient of personal commendation from J. Edgar Hoover. Mr Whitney was a member and past president of the Nebraska Personnel and ?Guidance Association, the VFW and the Humboldt-Dawson Ministerial Association.
Thomas Von Whitney wrote two books "Why Johnny Can't Pray" and the The Cain Connection'. He was a wonderful guitar
player and wrote many songs and poems. He wrote "The Happy Face Curriculum" for little children learning the alphabet and numbers for the Bible. Mrs Whitney married Shirley Porr on May 20, 1953.Three children were born to this union. Survivors are Thomas Dean (Rose) Sanford, Florida; Debra Kay Luly (Mike) Waco, Nebraska; and Daniel Dale, Sanford Florida. Mr. Whitney is also survived by four grandsons, two step grandsons,, one grand daughter and two step granddaughters, one brother, Jerry Dean Whitney, Topeka , Kansas one sister-in-law, Nancy Koeneke West Salem Wisconsin and many nieces and nephews.
The Whitney family moved to Florida in 1979 where Tom was the principal at Kings Academy in West Palm Beach. His motto in life was" Only one life and that's past, only what is done for Christ will last". I know he would say " if you could see me now I'm standing straight and tall and sitting at the feet of Jesus and walking the street of gold"?
A memorial service for Thomas Von Whitney was held October 7, 2o04 at Four Mile Congregational Church south of Humboldt, Nebraska. Arrangements for the memorial service were made by Wherry Brothers Mortuary. Burial was at Male Cemetery in Salem, Nebraska.
