MARTIN SPERRY 50 YEARS A METHODIST AND 40 YEARS A MASON.
Martin Sperry was horn in Dover, Ohio, Feb. 14. 1834, and died at his home one half mile south of town Thursday morning, Nov. 20th, of paralysis and valvular heart trouble. Mr. Sperry came to Michigan in 1853, bringing with him his brother Henry. They came with an ox team, and it required three weeks to make the Journey. Ever since that time except four years passed in Iowa, he has lived in or near Otsego. He was married July 1st, 1855, to Miss Sophia Swikert, the faithful wife who passed away March 3rd, 1911. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary July 1st, 1905. When first married they lived on the same farm where they died. Later they moved to a farm just west of town and then returned to their first love on the farm they held so dear. Three children were born to them, the oldest dying in infancy—Mrs. Lora Sherwood and Mrs. Cora Derhammer surviving, besides five grandchildren, two brothers—Henry and Sheldon of this place, and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Keech of Trowbridge. For 50 years he had been a member of the M. E. church, and for 40 years was a member of Otsego Lodge. F. & A. M. Mr. Sperry was a man highly respected and he will be greatly missed. The funeral was held from the home Saturday afternoon. The discourse was given by Rev. F. M. Taylor and the Masons had charge of the burial rites, which took place In Mountain Home. Those who attended the funeral were: Mesdames Geo. Collison, E. Bellinger, Bert Streeter, Will Randall, Will Smith, and Otis Pifer all of Kalamazoo: Frank Pifer, of Holland: Mr.
and Mrs. N. Johnson, Miss Vera Johnson, Mrs. Alice McCormlck, of Allegan, and Will Tubbs of Dorr.
