John Hal Elder (Hal) was born July 11, 1894, the fourth child of Rhoda and Joseph Elder. They lived on a small farm near Cobtown (today Cattlettsburg), in Sevier County Tennessee. Hal's siblings were brothers Charles, Toy, and Lee and Sister George. Hal attended Flea Hill (Oak Grove) School.

Hal entered the Navy as a Seaman on a Norfolk based transport ship, the USS Susquehanna. The USS Susquehanna, was a 10,058 gross ton transport, Hal entered active service on July 11th 1917 and served until September 8, 1919. At the time of his discharge he was a Boatswain's Mate 1st Class.

After the War, Hal returned to Sevier Co. September 19, 1921 he married Hattie Louise Trammell. Their children are Dorothy, John, Charley and Helen.
