Geo. W. Gravely, one of Axtons' most highly esteemed and prominent citizens, died suddenly Monday forenoon, October 1 his death following closely that of his brother, Zephaniah.

He had been in declining health for a number of years, due naturally to the infirmity of old age.

He was 93 years of age, and was born at Dyers' Store, Henry County, Virginia in 1835.

He was the eldest surviving son of John K. and Mary C. Gravely.

He was a Veteran of the Civil War having inherited those patriotic, loyal and daring traits which characterized the life of his grandfather (actually great grandfather), Joseph Gravely during the Revolutionary War.

He at the age of 17, volunteered and joined the Army, serving in the 42nd Virginia Regiment, where he received a bayonet wound and was on furlough for several months. After his recovery he returned to the army and was placed in the 38th Virginia Regiment, where he served until the close of the War in 65.

Later he married Miss Pocahontas Thomas, daughter of Wm. Pinkney Thomas and Arimenta Motley Thomas of Pittsylvania County. Residing in Pittsylvania County for several years finally locating at Axton, his present home, where he lived the remainder of his long and useful life.

Besides the one sister and one brother who survive him, he leaves his widow and the following children to mourn his loss, Mrs. W. T. Dix of Pittsylvania County, Mrs W. P. Rodgers of Leaksville, N. C., B. F. and Geo. W. Gravely Jr., of Danville; John L., Ferdinand, Marshall and Grover Gravely of Axton.

Funeral services were held at his home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock by the Rev. J. R. Bradshaw, a former pastor of the Methodist church, of which the deceased has been a member for 30 years.
