Elsie Butler, 98, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Friday (August 12, 1994) at the Grim-Smith Hospital in Kirksville, Missouri.

Born December 18, 1895 in Adair County, Missouri the daughter of George and Dicy (Holloway) Leavitt. On December 30, 1914 in Kirksville, Missouri she was united in marriage to John Sherman Butler who preceded her in death on January 10, 1956.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers; Ray Leavitt, Glen Leavitt and Verdis Leavitt, four sisters; Edith Herron, Leona Heaberlin, June Dye and Ruth Barnett and one son-in-law; Frank Marks.

She is survived by one son; Robert L. Butler and wife Freda of Kirksville, Missouri, one daughter, Virginia Marks of Kirksville, Missouri, five grandchildren; Mary D. Davidson, Roberta Bell, J.P. Butler, Henriett Garman and R.L. Butler and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Butler was reared in Yarrow and Sugar Creek area and attended the public schools. She later moved with her parents to the East Center Community. She and her husband lived on a farm in the New Hope Community until she moved to Village '76 in Kirksville, Missouri in 1977. She cooked at The White Cabin for many years.

She was a member of the First Church of God.

Funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Monday (August 15, 1994) in the chapel of the Davis-Playle Funeral Home with the Reverend David Strong officiating. Music was provided by Harold Moyer singing, "Manison [sic] Over The Hilltop" and "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone" accompanied by Wanda Donaldson, organist. Burial was in the Highland Park Cemetery, Kirksville, Missouri.

Pallbearers were J.P. Butler, Jim Bell, R.L. Butler, Darrel Garman, Bobby Leavitt an Keith Leavitt.

Visitation was all day Sunday (August 14, 1994) with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 9:00 Sunday evening at the Davis-Playle Funeral Home.
