April 8, 1920 - Carroll Times - B. Brunening was born in Germany in the year 1839, and died the 28th of March, 1920, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Wichmer, in St. Louis, Missouri.
At the age of 21 he married Miss Philomena Ploeme, and came to America the same year. To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy his wife also dying.
He married again at the age of 47 to Miss Elizabeth Gottkin who died 3 years ago. Since her demise he has made his home in St. Joe with his daughter.
To this last marriage were born six children, one dying several years ago. Those remaining are: Mrs. Boos, of Anamosa; Sister Mary, of Carroll; George, of Vail; Henry, of Arcadia; Mrs. Johnson, of California; Joe, of Idaho; and Mrs. W. Ennenbach. The last three were unable to come to the funeral which was held here Wednesday. He was laid to rest beside his wife and children.
The children wish to extend their thanks to those who so kindly rendered their aid in their late bereavement. The Bruning Brothers and Sisters.

Around 1865 he moved to the present Frank Schemmel farm west of Dyersville. Here Teresa was born to them Dec 18, 1865 and baptized in St Francis church. During the first Mission ever held in the parish. Philomena Bruening died on May 13, 1873.
Mr Bruening next married Elizabeth Kloenne in Oct 1875. They moved to the present Henry Willenbring farm west of Dyersille. They had the following children: Teresa, Agnes, Mary (became a nun), John, Josephine, and Bernard.
Before 1880 the Bruenings moved to Carroll county, where Mr Bruening operated a wagon shop.
