Henry was the son of Bernhard and Marie Bruning.

June 2, 1937 - Arcadia — Henry J. Bruning, a lifelong resident of Arcadia, passed away at the St. Anthony hospital at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. He had been seriously ill since suffering a cerebral hemorrhage last Thursday night. The body was taken to the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Mr. Bruning, who was 61 years old, was a carpenter by occupation. His wife, who was Miss Pauline Bruggeman before her marriage, passed away after they had been married only eight years. Her death occurred in May, 1924. After her death Mr. Bruning lived alone in his home at Arcadia. He was one of a large family of children. One sister, Mrs William Enenbach, of Hartley, Iowa was here with him during his illness.

June 4, 1937 - Funeral services for Henry J. Bruning, who passed away in St. Anthony hospital Wednesday, will be held on Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock at St. John's church in Arcadia. Rev. M. Stork will officiate at the services.

Mr. Bruning was born March 31, 1876 at Arcadia, Ia., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Bruning. His wife, the former Miss Pauline Bruggeman, passed away on May 3, 1924. Mr. Bruning had been ill with heart disease for several months proceeding his death and continued to get worse until Thursday night, May 27, when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was taken to the hospital. From then on he gradually grew weaker until the end and passed peacefully away without regaining consciousness.

At the time of his death he was holding the position of secretary of the Arcadia Telephone company and up to a few years ago he was assessor of the town of Arcadia for a number of years. Before his illness he derived much pleasure in caring for his flower garden, specializing in iris. At one time he had 49 different varieties. He also spent a good share of his time reading the latest books and magazines.

Survivors include the following brother and sisters, Joe Bruning of Portland, Ore., Mrs. J.I. Johnson (Frances) of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. J. Wichmer (Josephine) of St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. William Enenbach (Rose) of Hartley, Ia.

His parents and two brothers, George and Ed, preceded him in death. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Bruning, and a host of other relatives and friends.
