Johann "John" Mayer Sr. married Anna Roth in Klein-Lomnitz, Hungary in 1879. They had seven children, one child died in Klein-Lomnitz, Hungary before the family immigrated to the USA. He immigrated to the US in about 1882 via New York, and was naturalized in Pennaylvania, 1888. His wife and daughter Anna immigrated in about 1884. They originally resided in Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. John held several jobs before becoming a carpenter/contractor building several housing structures on Charles St., Allegheny City, PA. Due to a State minnie financial depression he sold his properties and they moved to Ilo, Idaho to Join a cousin George E. Tatko. He rented 160 acres of farmland located north of Ilo Idaho and his son John Jr. worked for cousin George Tatko on his homestead1st . John Sr. was an accomplished carpenter, overseeing the building of a 1st Presbyterian church in Ilo, Idaho, now called Craigmont, Idaho. George E. Tatko was a founding member of the Presbyterian Church.
Note: The 1st Presbyterian church was moved from old Ilo to the new Ilo townsite; near the newly established railroad. The town of Vollmer merged with new Ilo and they renamed the town Craigmont.
John Sr. also built several farm buildings inear old Ilo, for his cousin George Tatko and others, before applying for a homestead near Carter, Montana in 1909. His initial application was rejected due to lack of citizenship documentation. The homestead application was approved in 1910.
His Homestead case file Citizenship document shows his citizenship had been granted in September 15, 1888, Allegeheny Co., PA.
Proving up his homestead shows:
1911, Broke eighty acres. Seeded 20 acres to flax no crop.
1912, Eighty acres in wheat at Harvested thirty bu. to the acre.
1912, Broke Twenty acres more.
1913, Twenty acres of barley at 24BU. to the acre.
1914, Eighty acres of wheat at 20 bu. to the acre.
1915, Eighty acres now in winter wheat
