Robert served as a First Lieutenant on B-24D #41-24269, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Mahoning County, Ohio prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 7, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24D #41-24269 took off from 5 Mile Drome near Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea on a reconnaissance mission along the eastern coast of New Guinea. They were attacked by five Japanese Ki-43 Oscars. One of the Oscars, piloted by Sgt. Hikoto Sato, rammed them. Their last message sent stated the aircraft was going down. It is believed the aircraft went down in the vicinity of Karkar Island. No trace of the crew was ever found.
Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
