Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant & Engineer on B-24H "Super Mouse" #41-28594, 719th Bomber Squadron, 449th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Essex County, New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1942 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Married.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, after being battle damaged on a mission over Italy, had two of it's engines fail and had to ditch at sea off Elba during the war.

Six crew members died in the crash. Four other crew members bailed out and survived.

Lt. Clarence M. Frones remains washed up on shore in March, 1944.

Joseph was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
