Thomas served as a Staff Sergeant on B-26C "Marauder"(#41-34874), 440th Bomber Squadron, 319th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Hardeman County, Tennessee prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 29, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Stock clerk and also as Single, with dependents.

Thomas was declared "Missing In Action" on a bombing raid over Northern Italy during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
