Robert served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-29 "Joker's Wild II" #42-24857, 871st Bomber Squadron, 497th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, Indiana prior to the war.

B-29 "Joker's Wild II" #42-24857 took off from Saipan on a mission to bomb the Nakajima Aircraft Works near Tokyo, Japan. After bombing their target they had to ditch their B-29 for lack of fuel into the sea.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
