By 1920, Stella and her mother were living with her brother, Alfons and his family on Waveland Avenue in Chicago; Stella was 24, her mother 55.
It is assumed that Stella suffered from epilepsy, as she was institutionalized at Dixon State Hospital, also known at the time as "Illinois State Colony for Epileptics" for about 50 years. It is believed she was put there shortly in 1920. Her brothers Alfons and Paul moved to California with their families at that time.
Stella died of double pneumonia and obesity at the Ridgewood Nursing Home in Springfield, IL.
