When he was 24 years old, he married Emma Knudson on April 24, 1915 in Chicago. They had a son, Robert. Robert was only nine years old when his father was killed in a work-related accident on February 19, 1924.
Edwin had just started a deli a month before the accident. He had been outside the deli, checking the bakery delivery driver, horse and wagon when a streetcar collided with the wagon and knocked Edwin to the street. Edwin sustained a severe head injury and died immediately.
Edwin used the names Irvin, Ervin and Erwin interchangeably through his life.
By 1930, his widow, Emma had married Alfred Anderson.
