Irwin J. Turcotte Dies at 81


CLAYTON - Irwin J. Turcotte, 81, of 626 Merrick St., a retired boatman of 50 years, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where he had been a patient two months.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Cummings Funeral Home, and at 11 a.m at the Clayton Baptist Church, Rev. Robert Mowatt, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Donations may be made to the Clayton Ambulance Fund.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jessie Turcotte two sons, Donald and Joseph, both of Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Howard (Elaine) Hill, East Aurora, and Mrs. Lionel (Sally) Radley, Cape Vincent; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Clara) Garnsey, Grindstone Island, and Mrs. Clifford (Verna) Dwyer, Clayton.

A brother, Edwin, and two sisters. Mrs. Aletha Pettit and Mrs. Ada Holloway, died before him.

Born Jan. 26, 1897, at Grindstone Island, son of Joseph and Clara Fowler Turcotte, he served in the Army during World War I with Battery D of the Fourth Regiment Field Artillery, Camp Jackson.

He married Jessie Mcrae Dec. 28, 1920 at the Clayton Methodist-Episcopal Church,. Rev. William A. Gardner officiating.

He had worked for 50 years as a boatman, first for J. Walker Wood for 25 years at Hickory Island, and then 25 years for Cleveland E. Dodge at Wild Goose Island, retiring in 1968.

He was a 61-year member of Colon-Couch Post 821, American Legion and a member of the Clayton Senior Citizens Club.
