Herman was the son of Marshall Elsberry Osborne & Lizzie Grimes Osborne. He married Martha Gilliam, the daughter of Enoch & Laura McMillian Gilliam. The couple were the parents of five children when she passed away, at the age of 22, in 1920.

He married Sally Frances Sparks, the daughter of James Franklin Sparks & Margaret Iona Hatfield Sparks, on February 8, 1923, in the parsonage of the Christian Church in Lancaster, Kentucky. Rev. Weldon Manley officiated.

Sally helped him in the raising of his children, by his previous marriage, to adulthood. In addition, the couple were the parents of nine children. In Kentucky, Herman supported their family by working as a farmer.

In 1944, the couple moved their family to Indiana, so that Herman could seek employment there. He was hired by the Eaton Gear Works and retired from that company in 1957. Mr. Osborne was a long-time member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Richmond.
