Volunteered in the Georgia Militia in 1836. Became postmaster at Rotherwood on July 14, 1837. Built one of the earliest complete water-powered corn mills in Carroll County, Georgia, where he was living in 1855.
Died in 1860 and probably buried on his property in Carroll County, Georgia (now known as Hay's Mill). His widow moved with most of their children to Caledonia, Rusk County, Texas. It was a 43 day journey by wagon train; they arrived on December 11, 1865. A memorial stone was erected in his memory at Caledonia Cemetery. His actual grave is located here:
