Alvin L. Hopper, 85, of Lawsonham Road, Templeton, Madison Township, Armstrong County, died at 6:16 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, in his home following a lingering illness.
Born May 23, 1921, in Widnoon, he was the son of George and Elizabeth Minich Hopper.
He attended the Widnoon School.
Mr. Hopper served in the U.S. Army in the 81st Wildcat Division with the 323rd Infantry, Co. B, in the South Pacific, namely the Philippine Islands and Japan. While stationed in the Philippines, he organized the Sunshine Mission, ministering the gospel to island natives.
He was a lifelong farmer in Madison Township, Armstrong County, a coal miner at Kissinger Mines, worked for Bachman Coal Co. and also operated a family owned coal mine and then was employed at the Wildwood Mine in Allegheny County, retiring as a coal miner after 25 years of service. He also had been employed in the punch and shearer department at Pullman Standard Railcar Division in Butler, retiring from there after 20 years of service.
Mr. Hopper was a member of the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church in Wildcat, near Rimersburg, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, elder and trustee for several years. He enjoyed attending camp meetings with the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Conference in Stoneboro.
He enjoyed working on his small family farm and attending farm auctions, spending time with his family and friends and attending church functions.
Mr. Hopper was married in Templeton Oct. 15, 1946, to the former Louave Duncan, who survives. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October 2006.
Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Stanley R. and Tana Hopper of Templeton and Jerry Lee and Judy Hopper of Boardman, Ohio; four daughters and their husbands, Gloria N. and Denny Helsley of Widnoon, J. DeLee and Randall Craig of North Huntingdon and Shirley J. and Spencer Peters and Marilyn Kay and Randy Hannold, all of Cooperstown; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by a brother-in-law, Blair Wineberg of Widnoon; and a sister-in-law, Doris Hopper of Kellersburg.
Mr. Hopper was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jane Hopper Wineberg; three brothers, his twin, Fred Hopper, Allen "Tine" Hopper and Royce Hopper; and a son-in-law, Edward Hornberger.
