Susan was born in Orange Co., IN, on April 181 1831. Early in life she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a worthy member all of her life. Susan married James M. May on February 21, 1856, in Orange Co., IN. They lived in Indiana until 1861, when they moved to Monroe Co. IA, and purchased eighty acres there. In 1887, they moved from this farm to the Columbia area. James ("Uncle Jimmy") engaged in business as a general merchant for three years, after which he sold out and started in the hardware business. Six children were born to them: George W., Thomas V.,John H., Mary Elizabeth, William B., and Rachel.
Like all of this Harned family, Susan liked to have fun. Her great-nephew, Charles, remembered that she would roll up in her skirts and roll down the hill as he drove his mules by her farm to try and scare them. He also remembered that she smoked a pipe.
She passed away on April 19, 1920, at her home. Their daughter, Rachel, preceded her in death. For many days before her death she had been looking forward to her 89th birthday. On that occasion (the day before her death), she sat down to the birthday dinner with all her living children and many of the other relatives. In the evening when her pastor called she made the following somewhat peculiar remark: "I am tired of living and ready to go." At early bedtime she retired and was soon asleep and on the morning of the 19th, it was found that God had called her. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Columbia on April 21, sermon by Rev. Meeker. Burial was in the Oakdale cemetery.
