Son of John and Elizabeth Alexander Sommerville. Born in Gransha near Londonderry. One of 5 Sommerville brothers who came to America. Arrived about the year 1781 at the age of 18. He was originally a linen merchant living in Greencastle Pa. He traveled around Maryland and Virginia. Alex'r moved to Clarksburg, Va (then) in 1805 and was a general merchant and cattle dealer with business that took him into Ohio and beyond. He married Grace Miller a Quaker and had a large family of 16 children. Alexander became the sheriff of Harrison Co. Virginia, a post he held for many years. There is a story about him being so trusted that he was given the mission of transporting $150,000.00 by horseback from Winchester, Virginia to Marietta Ohio for a bank. Alexander is believed to be buried on his homestead near Arnold's Creek now Doddridge Co West, Va.
There are a number of references to Alexander in the diary of his brother William who was postmaster in Martinsburg, Berkeley, Co.
Alexander's family had the true pioneer spirit. His children moved west from Va to Ohio, Indiana,Kansas,Iowa and south to New Orleans. They have been located in cemeteries all throughout the midwest. Unfortunately one one child survived to old age.
