Dirk was the eldest child of Cornelis Folkertsma and Tetje Bruinsma. He came to the USA with his father and siblings on the SS Rotterdam, arriving in New York on 1 May 1880. A year later, on 27 August 1881, he married Nellie Van Neuren.

Grand Rapids Herald Obituary Article, Wednesday, Nov 13, 1929, pg. 3:
"Dirk Folkertsma, old resident, succumbs.
Stricken with apoplexy in his garage, Dirk Folkertsma, 74, of 1041 Alpine Ave. NW died yesterday [11/12/29]. Mr. Folkertsma had been a resident of Grand Rapids for 50 years and had been in good health. He is survived by the widow & 2 sons (Cornelius & Dick), 2 daughters (Mrs. G. Dyksterhuis, Mrs. J. Van't Hof), 1 brother, Isaac Folkertsma, 2 sisters, Mrs. J. VanNeusen [sic], & Mrs. J. Smith, 19 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Alpine CRC tomorrow [11/14] at 2pm. Burial will be in Washington Park cemetery."
