GLENS FALLS -- Helene J. Thayer, 65, of Ridge Street, wife of Paul Thayer, passed away Wednesday morning, July 27, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a long illness, with her loving husband by her side.

Born Feb. 28, 1940, in Granville, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Mary (Gilbert) Doty. Being raised in the Granville area, Helene attended and graduated from Granville Central School.

She met and later married Paul Thayer on Feb. 27, 1960, at St. Mary's Church in Granville, sharing six children and 45 wonderful years together until her untimely passing.

For about 28 years, Helene owned and operated Helene's Variety Store in Rutland, Vt., then took employment at Rutland Regional Medical Center for about 10 more years, until her physical disabilities forced her to retire.
Her enjoyments included all sports, especially football and NASCAR, with Junior being her favorite driver. She loved to watch her children and grandchildren participate in sports and would always be there to cheer them on.
Another enjoyment was going to Lake George in the summers with her family. She also was quite a history buff. She would often read about, watch movies on, or visit sites of historical value. Helene was an active member of Catholic Daughters from about 1969 to 1985 at Christ The King Parish in Rutland.

Besides her parents, one sister, Agnes Van Guilder, two infant brothers, her in-laws, Romeo and Olive Mayo, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, all predeceased her.

Survivors, besides her loving husband, Paul Thayer, include five sons: George Thayer and his wife, Annette, of Henrietta, N.Y., Christopher P. Thayer and his wife, Debbie, of Rutland, Stephen Thayer and his wife, Jody, of Scarborough, Maine, Kevin Thayer and his wife, Nicole, of Sheldon, Vt., and Gregory Thayer and his wife, Julianne, of Rutland; one daughter, Kelly Turner and her husband, Michael, of Brookline, N.H.; 19 grandchildren: Amanda, Shaina, John, Laura, Joshua, Matthew, Maurice, Westley, Cameron, Alexa, Mercedes, Olivia, Morgan, G. Leighton,
G. Alec, Macey, Stephanie, Evan, and Ariel; one great-grandchild, Kaidin; one brother, David Doty and his wife, Patty, of Granville; two sisters, Madeline Crandall and her husband, Ned, of Granville, and Caroline Juckett, also of Granville; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,cousins, and many dear friends.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at St. Alphonsus Church, 4 Crandall St., Glens Falls, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent, in loving memory of Helene, to Kidney and Urology Foundation of America, 1250 Broadway, Suite 2001, NY, NY 10001.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Ridge Street Emergency Squad for their timely response and care, and to Glens Falls Hospital staff for all their comfort and care given to Helene over the years.
