.. "I don't believe that John William Hawkins was from Vermont. Maybe I am wrong but I believe he is part of my Hawkins, Allen, family somehow. They are from the Shenandoah Valley into Ohio. ... First reason I believe this is the Allen name and 2nd is there have been a couple of "Allen Eugene Hawkins" in my family. I have been researching it with no blessing in my find yet" ...

NOTE: Information below provided by William Stark #46521610:

John enlisted in Company I, 150th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry for a 3-month term of service, May 2, 1864. He was mustered out at Cleveland, Ohio, August 18, 1864. His name is in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.

Other records support Vermont as the birthplace of John -- or at least the birthplace that he believed. Son (John W. Hawkins 'Jr') reported VT as his father's birthplace in both 1900 and 1930 Censuses. The senior John's entries in 1850, 1880 & 1900 Censuses show VT as birthplace, while 1870 shows as Ohio.
