He was named for his maternal great-grandfather, Sheldon Johnson, who served in the Navy during the War of 1812 and was one of the earliest settlers in Ohio. His grandmother was Jane Johnson Hillman, who was living with him when she died.

After leaving home at age 18 S.J. first worked for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad as station master and telegrapher before opening a general store in Collins. He also became a grain trader, eventually moving to Idaho in the same business.

He married Elizabeth Anna Love 27 Aug 1885 in Huron Co., OH.
