He was born August 24, 1931 north of Baileyville, KS to August and Elizabeth Osterhaus Wessel.
Norbert married Nellie Marie Smith on April 30, 1956. He farmed in the Baileyville area for a few years and later started Wessel Well Drilling. He retired in 1993. Norbert is a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort, KS.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nellie Marie in 2002, three sons Eldon, Leonard, and Jackie in 1964, and Benedict in 1996.
Norbert is survived by one son Norbert A. Wessel Jr. and his wife Julia of Burr, NE; four daughters, Pamela and Alan Schmid of Tecumseh, NE, Patricia and George Westendorf of Lincoln, NE, Nellie Jean Wessel of Beatrice, NE and Michelle Greenlee of Lincoln, NE. A brother, Albert Wessel, Frankfort, KS and five sisters, Lucille Tanking, Eileen Duryea, Helen Hermesch, Hilda Bergman all of Seneca, and Alma Dwerlkotte of Marysville, KS; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 9:00 AM at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort, KS. Father James Shaughnessy will be celebrant. Casket bearers are Anthony Schmid, Nathan Wright, Terry Smith, Leo Wessel, Morris Wessel, and Phillip Wessel. The rosary will be prayed Monday September 7th 2009 at 7:00PM at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort, KS. Burial will be in the St. Anthony Cemetery at Steinauer, NE.
