OBITUARY Iron County Reporter March 21 2007 "Obituaries: Elmer "Swede" Anderson" with photo
GAASTRA-Elmer "Swede" Anderson, 83, passed away March 16, 2007 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born Aug. 22, 1923 in Gaastra, the son of the late Erick and Else (Blomberg) Anderson, and was a life long resident of Gaastra. He attended the Gaastra and Palatka Schools and graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1941. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. On Aug. 9, 1947 he married the former Dorothy Tomasoski at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gaastra, and the couple made their home in Gaastra. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in 2006. He was a miner for the M.A. Hanna Mining Company until closure of the mine. He then was employed by the West Iron County Public Schools as a custodian and bus driver, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian and the former St. Mary's Catholic Church of Gaastra, where he served as usher. He was also a member of the American Legion. He served as mayor of Gaastra for nine years, and also served on the Stambaugh School Board. He was the baseball manager/coach for West Iron County High School for over 14 years. He was well known as pitcher for many of the area baseball teams. He was an avid Detroit fan. He was preceded in death by a brother Anders.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Michael (Jeanne) of Lakeville, Minn., Mark (Cheryl) of Iron River and Alan (Kim) of Grafton, Wis.; a daughter Kathleen Haydon of Crystal Falls; eight grandchildren, Meredith, Raymond, Eric, Shannon, Nicole, Michelle, Matthew and Joseph; one great-grandchild Alexis; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian with Rev. Otto Sartorelli and Deacon Robert Kostka concelebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. The West Side Veterans Council accorded military rites.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Raymond and Eric Anderson, Matthew and Joseph Haydon and nephews, Tony and Doug Tomasoski.
Interment was in the Stambaugh Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Inc. of Iron River.

STAMBAUGH-West Iron County Baseball Coach Elmer "Swede" Anderson is stepping down from the position he has held since 1986.
Anderson previously coached the Wykons from 1975-1983 before taking some time off and resuming his coaching career in 1986.
In a letter to Iron County Community Schools Director Lyle Smithson, Anderson wrote, "Please accept this letter as my official notice that I am retiring from my position as Wykon varsity baseball coach, effective on the hiring of a new coach by ICCS.
"I have enjoyed my job as coach and hope this program will continue to help our high school boys who are interested in this sport, and I will do all I can to continue to promote baseball.
"Thank you for all your support in the past years."
Among Anderson's coaching highlights are three Western Upper Peninsula Baseball League championships (1977-1979) and an E.J. Oas Memorial Baseball Tournament title in 1980.
