The son of "One-Eyed" John and Sarah (Mills) Hodgson, Zachariah was raised in a Quaker family in Indiana. He married Jane "Janny" Larrowe on 22 July 1847 at the Flat Rock Friends Meeting in Henry County, Indiana; this union produced nine children. He moved with her and their family to settle in southwestern Missouri. Janny died in 1870, so he remarried to Mary Louise (Passley) Nosler in 1875; this union produced four children. After Mary's death, he again remarried, this time to Martha (Hicks) Beshears in 1884; this union produced four children. He died in Missouri.
