United States Navy Admiral. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1867, and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral. As a Lieutenant, he commanded the warship "USS Wasp" during the Spanish-American War. From April 1911 until August 1912 he commanded divisions of the Atlantic Fleet, using as his command flag ships first the battleship "USS Minnesota", then the battleship "USS Florida". In the years prior to and during World War II the United States Navy had two destroyers named for Admiral Ward (DD-132 and DD-483).
