Was Business Man of Addison for 44 Years

Addison – Dec. 8 – The death of one of Addison's most prominent and well known business men, Charles W. Sackett, aged 72 years, occurred yesterday morning at his home on Tuscarora street. Mr. Sackett had been ill for about 10 months of heart trouble.

Deceased was born at Enfield Center N.Y., and the early part of his life was spent in Ithaca where in 1856 he was employed in a drug store. In 1873 he moved to this place and immediately entered into a partnership in the drug business with F.C. Taber. This firm of Sackett and Taber continued from the year 1873 until 1916 when Mr. Taber was forced to retire on account of ill health. In 1872 he married Miss Ida Cowles of Ithaca. Having been in the drug business in this place for the past 44 years he will be remembered by all of the older generation and also the later.

As a church worker Mr. Sackett was beyond the average. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and an elder for many years. He was always active in all works of the Church, especially of the Sunday School with which he had been connected for a great many years having taught a class during that time. He was superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School for a period of 26 years besides being a delegate to several Sunday School conventions. He was a faithful churchgoer and had one of the best records for steady attendance in this village. He was always a friend to the needy and was always willing to aid in any way anything of public or other interest. Mr. Sackett was always very quick witted and the point of a joke was never lost on him.

Mr. Sackett is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Maurice Miller and Miss May Sackett of this place, one brother Col. H.W. Sackett of New York City, and two sisters, Ruth and Sarah, of Ithaca. Mr. Sackett was one of the most respected and esteemed men in this village and at his death one of the oldest business firms in this part of the country will be dissolved. The funeral will be held at the home on Tuscarora street Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial in Ithaca.
