James had seven brothers and sisters - Robert Scobee (1826-1890), Mary Polly Scobee-Dooley (1826-1906), Alexander Samuel Scobee (1827-1910), Stephen Scobee (1829-1830), George Scobee (1835-1835), Elizabeth A. Scobee-Hillis (1837-1907), and Nellie Jane Scobee-Huls (1842-1931).
On Dec 7, 1857, in Montgomery County, Kentucky, James married Sarah Elizabeth Jane McIntire (1836-1925), daughter of Van S. Mcintire (1807-1842) and Grace Goodan (1810-1865).
James started his own farming on land adjacent to his parents in Montgomery County, Kentucky.
