Master mason, he built several notable buildings in Salem including the old City Hall in Derby Square. He was also a self-taught chemist who became superintendent of the Salem Laboratory Company. Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Salem.

He was the son of Jesse Upham and husband of (1st) Mary Nichols, and (2nd) Ann Marshall Rugg.
