Mrs. Ed A. Olsen, Pioneer Woman at Nelson, is Buried
Mrs. Johanna (Ed A.) Olsen, on of the pioneer women of the Nelson vicinity, was
buried Saturday at Nelson, following her death four days previously. Mrs.
Edward A. Olsen (Johanna Matilda) daughter of Johan Anderson and Johanna
Nilsdotter Anderson, was born near Falköping, Västergotland, Sweden, April 21,
1866, and came to America with her parents and brother Gust, arriving at Nelson
June 24, 1868, settling at the farm home near Nelson, which was her home ever
since.
She was married to Edward A. Olsen March 6, 1890, who preceded her in death
April 20, 1932.
Mrs. Olsen died of old age complications Tuesday, April 12, being over 82 years
of age. She was the last living charter member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church
and the Ladies Aid at Nelson.
Surviving her are three daughters, (Ann) Mrs. Harold F. Johnson of Nelson,
(Edna) Mrs. Carl F. Kiehne of Garfield, (Minnie) Mrs. Henry S. Miller of Hazen,
N.D., one son Andrew E. Olsen (wife Frances Hanson) of Tujunga, Calif., also
fifteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday April 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Anderson
Funeral Home, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Nelson. Rev. C.
E. Hansen officiated, assisted by Rev. A. T. Tjorholm.
Leighton Knudson sang "Sleep Thy Last Sleep" and "Den Store Hvide Flok",
accompanied by Mrs. Theo. Schelin. The pallbearers were: Eugene A. Engstrom,
Jr., Lester Jensen, Stanley Max, Winferd Anderson, Carlyle Kiehne, and Don
Eilers.
Note: Johanna Matilda Anderson Olsen's death occurred at the Fergus Falls State
Hospital in Otter Tail county, she had dementia.
Born at the tenant farm (torp in Swedish) Lilla Bergsgården, Bredene, Smula, Västra Götaland, Sweden after her father and uncle Sven had returned to Sweden from an attempt to make their fortune in Australia.
