THE ANDREW E. OLSEN FAMILY
By Andrew E. Olsen
December 1978

Frances M. Hanson and Andrew E. Olsen were married on October 29, 1929, in the home of her parents on the Hanson farm near Fahlun Church. Frances, daughter of Emanuel and Anna Hanson of Osakis township; Andrew, son of Edward and Johanna Olsen of Nelson, lived on the Olsen far at Nelson until 1931. Then lived on the Hanson farm in Osakis township until 1933.
In 1933, when we moved to San Fernando, California, someone said, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Hans Peterson of Nelson said, "And a setting hen lays no eggs!" (Eggs @ five cents per dozen -- the chicken said "I should egg-zert myself for a nickel?"
Leaving Nelson on May 5, 1933 in a 1925 Model T Ford, 2800 miles, 7 flat tires and 9 days later we arrived in San Fernando, with $3 in cash.
Motels, at fifty cents per night, were furnished with a bed and mattress, table and two chairs, a little flat top stove and maybe some corn cobs or firewood near the outhouse. We used our own bedding, dishes, kettles and coffee pot. We bought one new tier in New Mexico for $4. There were very few paved roads except in some large towns. In the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona, there were some places with wooden planking for roadways.
Andy worked at a dairy and a chicken ranch that year. In 1934, Arvid Larson and Andy started working at Sunshine Ranch (1200 acres of oranges, lemons and grapefruit). Frances worked at Olive View Sanitarium until 1939.
In 1938 Andy and Arvid started a trucking business, hauling oranges for seven years, and later hauling steel. Andy continued in trucking until retirement in 1973.
He tells this incident: When driving into San Fernando, a drunk man drove his car into the back of my truck. I got out and asked the man, "What happened?" He said, "I don't know, mister, I just got here."
We lived in Tujunga, California from 1949 to 1961. Then we moved to Newport Beach, California, until 1964. We now live in Whittier, California, and at Lake Jessie, Alexandria, Minnesota, in the summer months.

Andy and Frances had two daughters, Marvene, married to James Larson, and Kathryn, married to Phil Yanov. 5 grandchildren.
