Joe Howard Buckles

Joe Howard Buckles, 77, of Fauquier County died Friday, April 10, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital. He fought a long battle with heart and lung disease, but always had a positive attitude, a good sense of humor and a great love of life.

Born in Coaldale, W.Va., Mr. Buckles had retired as plant chief from the print plant at Fort Belvoir. He had also retired from the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. as a part-time bookkeeper. He was a 50-year Mason and belonged to Frank P. Moncure Lodge 279 and Edward Cann Daylight Lodge 1752. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Stafford County.

He is survived by a daughter, Wanda C. Neal of Fauquier; three grandchildren, Larry E. Neal and his wife, Sherry Rose Neal, Kelly Ann Lester and her husband, Benny Lester Jr., and Joe W. Swerchek and his wife, Shannon Swerchek; six great-grandchildren, Alan Ray Lester, Laura Nell Lester, Larry E. Neal II, Zachary Tyler Neal, Joe William Swerchek Jr. and "adopted" daughter of 40 years Ann Follin of Hague. He is also survived by three nephews, Timmy Mullins, Todd Mullins and Terry Mullins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, G. Nell Buckles; his youngest daughter, Katie Jo Buckles; his brother, Jimmie E. Buckles; his sister, Anna Jean Mullins; and his parents, Ollie Burns Buckles and Maggie Nash Buckles.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 13, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, where a funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday, April 14. Pastor Bill Kittle and the Rev. Paul Curry will officiate. Interment will follow in Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Rock Hill Church Road, Stafford. A meal for family and friends will be provided at Rock Hill Baptist Church following the services.

Pallbearers will be Larry E. Neal, Benny Lester Jr., Alan Ray Lester, John R. Follin, Reggie R. Follin and Roscoe Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to Rock Hill Baptist Church, 12 Van Horn Lane, Stafford, Va. 22556.
