Aged Pioneer is Victim of Short Illness. Old Valley Settler Who Came to This County in 1889 Dies Monday in Havre
Emery C. Newby, 77, one of the oldest pioneers of this section of the state died at a local hospital last night.
The deceased came to Montana in 1889 from Kansas and settled in the Milk River valley. At the time of his arrival he built his cabin in an Indian settlement and tepees surrounded him. Fort Belknap at that time was still running and there was no settlement at Chinook. A box car was used for the depot. Until his death last night, Mr. Newby has been a resident in this territory and is known by hosts of people.
Mr. Newby was taken ill a week ago Monday. He seemed to be in perfect health before that time. His wife and sons took him to the hospital and it was found that he had little chance of recovery. He died at 11 o'clock last night, just before his son, Terrell, an evangelist in Nebraska, arrived.
The deceased is survived by his widow, six sons, Hazel O. Newby of Havre, Earl C. Newby of Grandview, Wyo., Lester B. Newby of Havre, Arthur D. Newby of Havre, Terrell C. Newby of Chappell, Neb., and Nixon Newby who resides in Havre; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Ramburg of Shambo. One sister, Sally Lane of Dayton, Ohio, and a brother, Tom, of Sterling, Kansas, also survive.
