Albert was born in Blount County to Hannah Nichols and a father who has not yet been identified. He was the grandson of James and Elizabeth Nichols who moved to Cades Cove in the early 1800's from SC. He married Sarah "Sallie" Cooper on February 4, 1879, and they lived in Cades Cove for several years, then moved to Tabcat Creek near Calderwood. Sallie was the mother of John Bennett Cooper and Margaret when they married. They were the parents of Mary Amanda, LaZinna, Tennessee Mae, Dicey Cornelia "Neal", and Lee Nichols. Lee accidentally drowned while swimming in the river when he was 17.
