Fred Jurgens Sr. 89, of Wapella, formerly of Springfield, died at 9:05 a.m. Saturday at Lincoln Manor Nursing Home in Decatur.
He was born Sept. 30, 1902, in Zetel, West Germany, the son of Gerhard and Anna Hurling Jurgens. He first married Hannah Emmett in 1928 in Petersburg. She died in 1963. He then married Alice Bland in 1967 in Griffin, Ind. Also preceding him in death were three sons; one brother; and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Alice; two sons, Kenneth Jurgens of Shoals, Ind., and James Bland Jr. of Arrowsmith; three daughters, Karen Sue Vaughn of Jacksonville, Nancy Remmers of Weldon, and Patty Sunderland of Clinton; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helena Werdermann of Schortens, West Germany.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Herington-Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery, Wapella.
