Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2009, at Skene Baptist Church. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. in Smith Cemetery in Charleston.
Mr. Sykes was born on March 5, 1929, in Charleston to Lewyn Weaver Sykes and Sammie K. Sykes. He married Juanita Tribble on June 12, 1950.
He was a maintenance supervisor with S.T. Environmental until his retirement.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Sykes.
Survivors include two sons, John B. Sykes Jr. and his wife, Anita, of Charleston and Jimmy Sykes and his wife, Paula, of Indianola; a brother, R.J. Sykes; and a sister, Juanita S. Glinsky; four grandchildren, John Michael Sykes and his wife, Amy, Katie Sykes Crenshaw and her husband, Lee, Jonathan Paul Sykes and Jennifer Lauren Sykes; and three great-grandchildren, Mattie Grace Sykes, Aden Garrett Sykes and John Thomas Crenshaw.
Pallbearers are Bert Mann, Bill Mann, Keith Christopher, Joe Reed, Mark Redden and Bill Griffith.
