Buford Olander Kennedy, Sr. age 90, died Sunday, November 4, 1984 at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence, Kentucky. Mr. Kennedy was the widower of Zelma Hughes Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy was the son of Dudley Simeon and Eliza Belle Roberts Kennedy.

March 15, 1922 Buford Kennedy married Zelma Lillian Hughes. The marriage was performed by Reverend Noland at the Clerk's Office in Williamstown, Grant County, Kentucky. In 1979 after 54 years of marriage, Zelma passed away after a short illness. In an article that appeared in the Kentucky Post on Tuesday, November 6, 1984, Mr. Kennedy's son, Lloyd Kennedy, was quoted as saying this father was 'a lonely thing after that'.

In World War I, Mr. Kennedy served in the United States Army in a calvary troop. He was stationed in Texas, but was never shipped to Europe.

Buford Kennedy, Sr. worked as a farmer in Williamstown, KY. He started his farm in 1930. During the 41 years of farming Mr. Kennedy raised tobacco and garden produce on a farm that varied in size from 75 to 100 acres. He also raised about 35 head of beef and dairy cattle. His son, Lloyd, indicated that although it was hard work - from 4 a.m. until 6 p.m. at night, Buford never complained. He loved it. Bufored retired from farming in 1971 at the age of 77, but it is reported that he did not end his over 60-year love affair with his land.

He kept gardening, raising potatoes, tomotoes, and onions, eating what he and his family could and giving away the rest. Lloyd said his father loved it. 'He really did, he said, I don't think anybody in the world loved his work any more than he did. I only wish I could be half the man he was'.

Buford's love affair with his work and his land continued until August 29, 1984 when he suffered a stroke at the age of 90, after a morning spent cleaning up his garden.

Mr. Kennedy's death at Woodspoint in Florence was a direct result of the stroke he suffered in August of 1894.

Mr. Kennedy was survived by his son, Lloyd, of Williamstown, Kentucky, another son, Buford O. Kennedy, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a sister, Clarabel Kennedy Jenkins of Bryan, Texas, as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kennedy was predeceased by A brother, Luther Stanley Kennedy in 1977 and a sister Aladean Kennedy Higgins (Alonzo S.) in 1982.

Services were held Wednesday, November 7, 1984 at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown Cemetery.

Mr. Kennedy was my great uncle by marriage.
