Jens, was born in Sogndal in 1823 to Steen Mikkelsen Valsberg and Anne Jensdatter Hostanger . In 1845 he married Anna Pedersdatter Barsness. They had two children. Their daughter Anna was born in 1845 and died at a young age. Their son, Steen, was born in 1848. In 1855 Jes was left a widower with the death of his wife, Anna. Jens was a fisherman and a friend persuaded him to move to Nordland. This would be a long move as Nordland is north of the Arctic Circle. This friend promised Jens that he would arrange for someone to look after his son. They moved to the city of Bodo. (Allen visited Bogo in 1982 and 1988 because of his mother's roots in the area and did not realize at the time his father also had roots in the area.)

Steen was left in the care of Thora Sofia Pedersdatter Lop. In 1860 Jens and Thora were married at Bodo. The records indicate that Thora was born in 1832. Their oldest child, Johan, was born in 1861 but died at a young age. Anna Maria was born on October 9, 1892, and Petrine Sofia was born on May 19, 1866. That year the family left Bodo on the ship "Norden" to emigrate to America. (Allen has a copy of the passenger list). It was a long and arduous journey and by the time they reached Quebec the food supply was getting low.

The Stenson's travelled via the Great Lakes then across land to Vernon county, WI. They joined the Coon Prairie Lutheran Church which was near Westby, WI.

Steen (their son) did not accompany the family to America but emigrated in 1869. He married Johanna Erickson in 1870 and they also settled in Vernon County. They had two sons, Albert and Emil. Steen went by the name Steen Steenson in America. The Steenson's are buried at Coon Prairie, WI.

Four more children were born to Jens and Thora during the years they lived in Wisconsin. The daughters were Jensena Lousia and Mary. The sons were John and Martin.

In 1882 the Stenson's moved to South Dakota and had a farm a little over two miles from Oldham. In 1887 both Thora and Mary died from typhoid fever, many in the area were sick at the time. A seventy-one year old lady, who lived in Oldham, heard that no one wanted to prepare the bodies for burial for fear of the illness. This lady, who also had a crippled leg, walked the two miles to the farm and prepared the bodies for burial. Thora and Mary were buried near the home yard. There are no buildings on the land now but the graves are fenced off. There is a tombstone with both names on it and family members have cared for the graves over the years. Jens died in 1892 and we are told that his sons took him to North Dakota to be buried (or was there when he died).

The Stenson's had five children who survived, Anna (Mrs. Andrew Severson). Sofia (Mrs. Halsten Knutson), Lousia (Mrs. Arne Boe Olson, John and Martin.

Family lore has it that his sons brought him to ND where he died & is buried, however a letter has been found that indicates he is buried next to his wife on a private plot east of Oldham, SD.
