Jacob R. Owen, son of Jacob Owen and his wife, Elizabeth Leatherwood, was born in Haywood, North Carolina. He was married first to Mary Adelaide "Ada" Gregory. Between 1854 and 1871, they had five children who were all born in Georgia; Robert, William, Mary, Tallula "Lula" , and Charles. Jacob was a dry goods merchant, land owner and a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church according to 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. He and Ada raised their family in Paulding and Randolph Counties. In 1895 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Joel Brown nee Walker, a farmer and the widow of Cornelius Brown. They lived in Houston Co., Ga. , the home of her family, where he died. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cuthbert, Randolph C., Georgia, with his first wife near other family members.
