Joan L. Weddle Martin, 82, of Fredericksburg, Va., formerly of West Georgetown Road, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior at 9:55 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Joan is gone from our lives, but not from our minds and hearts. She was known for both her generosity and amazing baking skills. She was elected to and served four terms as the Harrison Township Trustee in Bartholomew County because of her blend of compassion and pragmatism.
She was a member of the Garden City Church of Christ, Bronson United Methodist Church in Bronson, Fla., and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. Joan had a passion for camping and was a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association.
A celebration of life of Joan will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Born in Clinton County, Ill., March 14, 1926, Joan was the daughter of Orville James and Thelma Leora Zilles Malan. She married William L. Weddle June 8, 1946. She later married Ted L. Martin February 10, 2004.
Survivors include her husband Ted; children, William L. Weddle, Jr. of Dallas, Texas, Michael R. (Cindy) Weddle of Seymour, James A. (Helen) Weddle of Columbus, Leonard E. (Carol) Weddle of Fredericksburg, Va. and Sara A. (Kevin) Beckwith of Seymour; grandchildren, Lisa (Toby) Paswater, Wendy (Steve) Shoop, Carrie (Todd) Roberts, Michelle (Paul) Geiger, Nicole (Francis) Stotts, James (Nikkiah) Weddle, Alan, Lucas and Amanda Weddle and Stephanie (Brian) Beckwith; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara (Dale) Strahl of Columbus, Esther Rutledge of Indianapolis, Fay Bracher of Princeton, Phyllis McQueary of Columbus and Karen (Ty) Streeval of Freetown; brothers, Frederick Malan of Freetown, Howard (Donna) Malan of North Vernon, Jack Malan of Columbus and Robert Malan of Freetown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William L. Weddle July 30, 1995; sisters, Thelma Shelf and Ruth Hendricks; and brothers, John Paul and Bud Malan.
